How I Made It: Dimensional Designed Planters

I love plants, how about you?

I like the look of adding plants to my decor and I think it does a lot for most interior design types. Planters can get expensive and the budget friendly ones aren't always... pretty or interesting to look at it. You can take a boring terracotta planter and transform it in so many ways though. I'm going to share with you one way I've jazzed up terracotta planters that I picked up from the dollar store.

Southwestern and geometric patterns are hot right now and I love what they bring to a space, but these could be made to have any design on them.

I began by cutting out shapes from foam that I felt has a Southwestern or Aztec feel to them. That meant lots of rectangles, triangles, crosses and variations of those shapes.

Then, I places them onto a tabletop covered with paper and sprayed the backs with spray adhesive. If you're not comfortable using spray adhesive, hot glue will work but may leave bumps beneath the shapes, and a good glue stick would work well, too.

Once the spray adhesive went tacky, I played around with the shapes, layered some and created a design that I loved.

At this point I was very tempted to leave the planters as is. The neon against the terracotta is just so fun!

But I'd bought the paint to use for this project and knew that I'd grow tired of the neon (It's just not really my style). So then I took them out to the garage and sprayed them all with spray primer.

Once the spray primer had time to dry, I just brushed on the paint. I followed up with another 2 coats, allowing each coat to dry fully.

I had a lot of fun playing around with these planters in creation and still do have a lot of fun with them. This is definitely a DIY I will do again with some variation in the future. If you create a version of your own, let me know by tagging me on Facebook or Instagram.

I was inspired to create these after reading the lovely ladies behind A Beautiful Mess blog's book "A Happy Handmade Home." If you're in a creative rut, definitely check this book out! It's full of wonderful ideas that require little to no skill!

I've since painted a couple of them copper. I love the look! I definitely think it's worth playing around with different paints to get the look you want with these.
