So guys, today is the day. It's Calling It Home's One Room Challenge reveal day. And I have no finished bathroom to reveal. It would be un-human of me to claim this wasn't some kind of learning experience. These things always are a learning experience. I've never lived through a bathroom renovation before.
I've never selected lighting and tile. I didn't know there was a difference between a left and right hand tub (though it's existence doesn't boggle my mind in the least, it just wasn't something I had ever thought about). I had good and bad craigslist encounters in this adventure, I had the chance to work with some awesome companies (MOEN, Jeffrey Court for Home Depot, STAINMASTER, LampsPlus, DecoART, Purdy, HomeRight and Minted), I've learned so much about a neighbor I barely greeted before. This whole experience has been phenomenal.
I did not finish my bathroom remodel in 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks were spent on the design, the second two weeks were spent sourcing most supplies and a contractor, and the past 2 weeks were spent on the actual work.
If I were to do this again, I would preplan some aspects and purely spend the 6 weeks on the actual labor.
So what did we get done?

The bathroom was completely gutted. A layer of the plywood floor was taken out to even up the floor with the hallways. The walls were removed down to the studs. The toilet, sink and tub were removed. We did have a lead test since our home was built 1954.
Then we had the walls insulated and drywalled. An electrician came in to move the wires for the vanity lights, fix up some of the mess left from a previous baseboard heater, and run a line for the hot water heater we're putting in our pantry (I have an "interesting" post coming up on that!). The pipes for the tub had to be reworked to accommodate the new fixtures. The floors and shower surround have durock and our awesome contractor put in a nice big 2 level recessed nook for all our shampoos, conditioners, soaps, etc.

A couple nights ago we had to find 2x6 and 6x6 bullnose tile that matched the tub wall tile. Can I just sarcastically ask who's bright idea it was to name a warm leaning white tile "snow?" They look beige against a true white tile. So we shelled out a couple hundred dollars from The Tile Shop to order matching bullnose tile. This combined with the tub fiasco has set us nearly a week behind schedule.
I bought a lot of pretty things for the space and I figured the next best thing to showing a finished space would be to show the unfinished space and a few pictures of all the pretty things that I picked up for the space. Here they go!

Copper candle holders are Target dollar spot. Copper soap dish and toothbrush holder are Wayfair, Wooden faceted vase, glass lidded jar with copper top (was chrome, spray painted it to match) are Target. Cream tumbler with indigo tribal design, blue jar with cork lid, footed candle and Volcano soap are Anthropologie, the turkish towels are Amazon. The jade plant and pot are a gift from my mom. I spray painted IKEA shelf brackets with Ace Hardware's brand copper spray paint- it's my favorite copper spray paint for it's finish and color.[/caption][caption id="attachment_1721" align="aligncenter" width="700"]
The morrocan looking tile is Marrakech mosaic tile from Jeffrey Court and we color matched it to a bullnose tile from The Tile Shop.[/caption][caption id="attachment_1720" align="aligncenter" width="700"]

With the holidays creeping up, I'll be slowing my pace down, but hopefully sooner than later the bathroom will look a little something like this!
This is a great project, and it looks about how my bathroom looks right now - in boxes! Can't wait to see how your bathroom comes out when it is finished. Keep on going!
ReplyDeleteOh Corinna, I feel your pain! I didn't finish my ORC kitchen makeover (not even close). I totally agree with you about having the design and all materials in place at the start of the six weeks. Huge lesson learned. Don't fret, though! I can tell already that it is going to be a truly amazing space when you're finished. That tile is beautiful and all of the accessories you have chosen are gorgeous! I can't wait to see the finished space!

ReplyDeleteEven though you didn't finish, you still got a LOT done, and your eventual reveal is going to be awesome! I absolutely love the tile and the mirror. You never really know what you're going to get when you start tearing stuff out of a house. We ran into a lot of trouble with our wood floors in this makeover because we didn't know exactly what the condition was when we tore the carpet out. If not for my husband stepping in and figuring out the labor when our floor guy bailed, we probably wouldn't have finished, either! All of this is to say, it happens! You still made so much progress, and I'm looking forward to seeing your beautiful design come to life!
ReplyDeleteI hate that I'm not seeing a reveal because it's going to be soooooo good! Progress is progress and you guys definitely made a lot. Also, I had no idea there were right/left side tubs either!! Crazy.

ReplyDeleteBathroom remodels are no joke, the one I did when I first moved into the house took us a month after work and on weekends. It pretty much burned us out though. Even though you didn't finish, I can totally see how gorgeous it's going to be when you're all done. That tile is beyond dream worthy!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be amazing and you have really made a lot of progress. I've reno'd an old home ad it is not a stroll through home décor stores and a by the book install of anything. It's going to be soooo worth it. I love your morrocan tile and that mirror is so fab for your space. I did a bathroom and made no structural changes or demoed anything and barely made it in 5 weeks!! You'll be glad you took this on when you are soaking in the tub and enjoying your visioncome to life.

It sounded like you had so so much work to be done so as it's a bathroom you are going to want to love for a long time. Good for you for not rushing and creating something that will be beautiful for the long run. Can't wait to see the reveal! :)

Corinna, there's so much goodness unfolding in your new bathroom!!! I love all the elements that you're bringing in. The mirror, tile, fixtures, etc. - gorgeous! I feel you with the bathroom remodel process having gone through it twice now (one more to go!). But it will all be worth it in the end! I'll be following your progress. :)
