Making over my bathroom took a lot longer than I had originally planned. A lot of that was poor planning and a lot of that was simply trying to make this happen on an ever fluctuating budget. But we are here and the bathroom is quite beautiful. With it's subtle globally inspired details and it's carefully curated boho design, this full bathroom is no longer the eyesore it was when we first moved in. Let's take a look around at everything this boho bathroom makeover has to offer.

The project first started October 2015. It started and stopped a lot in the three years it took to feel like it was truly finished. I tried things and loved them but they just weren't quite right for this space. The way the bathroom is now, I truly enjoy being in here. I get a good vibe from the space. It's hard to really describe it beyond that it's just beautiful. But you probably want the details, no?
The Walls
I have been petrified of painting the walls in my home any color other than white for years now. Once upon a time I tried doing a dusty teal in the living room and hallway and it was difficult to decorate around. And I tried a grey in my son's room right after we moved in and the room felt like a dungeon for years. But this blue... this blue truly is amazing. It's bright enough to brighten the room up, light enough not to overpower the space, and green enough not to feel cold. This color is Gossamer Sky by Valspar.On the walls, I have the sconces, mirror, canvas art, and shelves. There's not a lot going on and to be honest, that's because I didn't want to put a dozen more holes in the wall to be spackled over again.
Let's start by chatting about those sconces. They are the Kichler Braelyn 9 1/2″ High Olde Bronze Wall Sconces from Lamps Plus. They're not too big, not too small, and I love the seeded glass paired with the bronze finish. I feel like they have enough style to look and feel like the upgraded lights that they are without being too much of any one style to make it hard to swap things in and out of the space.
I knew I had to have this mirror the moment I saw it. I bought it even though it had a price tag that still makes my throat a bit tight when I think about it. The first time I ordered this mirror, the wrong mirror arrived. And then it was out of stock. I couldn't find it anywhere else and felt totally defeated. That was until I attempted a reverse image search and found this mirror on Amazon. It will follow me wherever I move because it adds exactly what I want to a space!
The canvas is a print of one of my own photos. I dabble in a bit of mushroom and fungi photography in my spare time and this is one I came across on a trail on lazy Saturday morning this past Fall. It was turned into a canvas and gifted to me by Canvas People. And the shelves are simple pieces of lumber with the IKEA EKBY BJÄRNUM shelf brackets spray painted oil rubbed bronze.
The Floors
The floor was tiled in a tile that appears to be no longer available. It's called Madeira Oak and they are a 6 inch by 24 inch tile. There are loads of different wood look floor tiles available nowadays so it's just a matter of finding one in a color and grain that works for a design. Over top the tile I have a thrift store Persian style runner rug and I like the deep red with the blue in the wall paint color.
The Shower/Tub
We have the standard shower/tub combo in this bathroom. We did replace the old porcelain tub that was in here before because it was small. This one is deeper and perfect for our little boy to play in during bath time.
The tile is the Jeffrey Court Marrakech mosaic tile exclusive to Home Depot. This was provided to us through a partnership with Jeffrey Court. The tile is really pretty and I get compliments on it all of the time! I took the tile all of the way to the ceiling for added drama since the ceilings are just 8 feet in this house.
The double curved shower curtain rod is a beauty. I love that the curve gives us extra space as we are moving around in the shower. And the double rod means I can hang a towel, a shower comb, and a basket with my son's bath toys without preventing the curtain from shutting all of the way. It also means I don't have to say goodbye to all my hot steamy air when the shower is over before I've dried off. I simply keep my towel hung on the inner rod and dry off with it before I open the curtain to get out.
I really love the shower curtain. It's the shapes shower curtain from Threshold at Target but it mimics a mudcloth pattern in an off white linen type fabric. I wouldn't want to use actual mudcloth fabric in here because I worry the exposure to constant moisture would damage it so this was a safe way of bringing in texture and that global style.
And the Ashville Mediterranean Bronze Tub/Shower faucet set from Moen is fantastic. I love the easy to operate single handle because it means my son can get the shower started himself. And I can make micro adjustments as to just how hot I want to water blasting on me after a long day. The shower head is nice and big which makes it great for covering large body surface area. Who wouldn't love that?! It's also a nice contrast to the white tile while tying in with the dark grout color.
The Sink Vanity
I had a couple of go arounds before getting the vanity situation just right. I started with a bargain vanity that was 19 inches deep and while it was an improvement from the traditional 24 inch depth cabinet that was in here before, there was still too much shuffling to be done to get back to the toilet. So I caved and took it out to replace it with one of those vanities that have the 12 inch deep cabinet with the sink that bows out further (this one). I thought they looked weird but they truly are spectacular for bathrooms like mine that are very narrow in space. I like that we have a full sink basin and we still have some hidden storage beneath unlike a pedestal. I wish these came in an even wider style but this is still a huge improvement. I imagine my situation is even more unique than most.
To tie in with the hardware in the rest of the space, I installed the Moen Banbury collection Mediteranean bronze two handle sink faucet. Again, I like the dark finish of the Mediterranean bronze with the white of the sink. It has golden copper details which tie in with the finish of the sconces and the same details in the shower faucet. It makes it easy to pull in other warm metallics into the space because they all tie in together.
I specifically wanted to avoid vanities that had built in splash guards because I wanted to tie in the tile in the shower shelf to the vanity area by putting in my own tiled splash guard. This tile is sadly no longer available but it was called Archivo Fleur De Lis from Merola Tile.
The Storage
Everything that needs to be stored for the bathroom is either on the shelves, under the sink, on the shower shelf, in the linen closet, or is inside of the wood cabinet. I had originally bought the wood cabinet from Wayfair a few years ago to use at the end of our hallway. I moved it in here when I wanted to fill the wall space and it's great for filling with toilet paper and children's toothbrushes and toothpaste when I want the room to look extra pretty. It's the dongbei style cabinet and I like it because it has the rustic raw look of wood with a modern shape.
Above the toilet on the shelves, I have a pretty inlay box from Lamps Plus that holds feminine products. I think I have a decorative box in every room of the house because they're just so useful. Lamps Plus has a lot of different styles and sizes of decorated boxes that make it easy to find practical storage that compliments decor in any room.
The Decor
I've mixed a lot of thrift store decor with on trend pieces for the most authentic feeling design in the bathroom. The baskets, little containers, and gold tray atop the wood cabinet are thrifted. I like the texture woven pieces like baskets bring to bathrooms because they bring coziness to an otherwise sterile space.
The head planter is from Lamps Plus. I love a versatile and whimsical planter like this head one because it's fun to swap plants in and out to give her a different look. Every space should have at least one fun detail that takes the seriousness out of everything because it puts people at ease.
The toilet paper holder is from the Ashville collection in old world bronze and has a pivoting paper holder making toilet paper roll changing so easy. Every one in the house can change the roll now even if it means it's facing the wrong direction. With our previous holder, the piece you slide the toilet paper onto was constantly popping off and disapearing. It coordinates with the 18 inch old world bronze Ashville collection from Moen towel bars on the back of the door. I love mounting towels bars to the bar of the door! It keeps the walls free and makes good use of the door.
I made the bath tray with some spare lumber in my garage from an old project. I like to set it up with a candle and some small plants whenever this transforms into my little oasis. Because it is the only bathroom in our house, it has to serve a lot of functions and I like that a little piece like a tray can be the starting point to a quick scene change.
I've learned so much through the years it's taken to complete this project. I've learned to love a wall color. I've learned how to work pieces in a space better. I've learned my own DIY capabilities. There's a big range in which you can transform a bathroom space and we balanced the budget on our full boho bathroom makeover by balancing high cost projects like the shower tile with cheap projects like shelving.
