Two Toned Painted Walls & What I've Learned About Painting Furniture

Greetings everyone. I'm another week into transforming our sunroom into The Boho Lounge and while there are no exciting pictures to share yet, I've still made a lot of progress. Or I hope you'll agree it's a lot of progress because I am wiped out! I've been prepping furniture to be painted, started painting furniture, finished (I think) the walls and I feel like the room is finally taking shape! I think I need to take a moment away from painting over the weekend so I can take inventory of the smaller projects that still need to be finished so they don't catch up all at once at the last minute. Anyways, let me dive into all of the progress of The Boho Lounge's transformation.

By The Week

Week 1: Dry testing the furniture arrangement, revealing the design plan.
Week 2: Removing the remaining wallpaper, prepping walls for paint, caulking wainscotting.

Week 3: Painting the walls (I hate painting walls, I suspect this is where I falter)
Week 4: Install curtain rods and curtains, touch up paint, decorate.
Week 5: Final decorating, Photographing. + Install Curtains/Rods + Finish Painting Furniture + Install Shelves
Week 6: Reveal the finished space.

Two Toned Painted Walls

I had originally planned to be a bit further along in the painting process than I ended up being thanks to my inability to schedule multiple aspects of my life carefully. Last week we were out of town for a whole week so now I've had to play catch up. I also have a bit of decorating ADD and projects I didn't originally plan on taking on have been taken on. So this week I do not have curtains and curtain rods installed to share but...

The walls are (I think) compeltely finished. I've looked them over a few times and I can't find anywhere that needs another coat. I think I'll do one more of the white for maximum brightness but the top color went on in two coats.

The top color is called "Winter In Paris" from Valspar's line of paint available at Lowes. I shared a picture of all of the paint chips I was considering and let everyone vote on it on my Instagram Stories. I like this color because it's a light-medium blue toned grey that doesn't lean to powdery and purple nor does it look pastel. The paint color also makes the white look even more vibrant in comparison.

Painting Furniture

So besides the walls, I've also started working on painting some furniture that was not in the original plan. Since I'm reusing furniture that I already had on hand but want a brighter feel to The Boho Lounge, I'm using DecoArt's Satin Enamel paint in Pure White.

I have an accent table from when my husband and I first moved in together that was a red toned wood color. I gave it a good sanding with my random orbit sander (maybe too good, in some places I sanded right through the wood veneer). The table functions well as a table and serves me much better than it would on the curb so I'm working on getting the paint opaque so it can be a beautiful spot for plants and coffee.

Then I have the bottom part of the Broyhill china cabinet that lived in my dining room for years now. I never utilized the shelves and cabinet well so that part has been removed and now I've filled the holes where the pieces attached and will sand the whole piece this weekend to prepare for paint.

What I've Learned About Painting Furniture

Sanding furniture is time-consuming. I really wanted to just go over the piece quickly and get on with the paint. But especially with one that's warped from water, it takes a while to get everything level enough to get an even finish.

Dark colored stains can bleed into your paint. About halfway through my first coat of paint, I noticed the paint going yellow in the areas I didn't sand as well. The paint was actually eating into the stain and mixing. I honestly can't be bothered for perfection because I am already so far behind so I've kept going in hopes it won't bleed through the third and/or fourth coat. And if it does, it does.

Bugs and Dirt miraculously appear on the most seemingly wind free day as soon as you start painting. I don't know about you, but these things seem magnetized to fresh paint. No matter how wind-free a day I picked, dirt and bugs were constantly getting stuck in my paint. And I fear dust and pet hair are going to be the problem once I start on the buffet table since I'll be doing that one indoors.

I enjoy it only marginally more than painting walls. I just don't enjoy painting. I get frustrated and bored with the process easily. But painting furniture is not as bad as painting walls in my opinion.

Alright! That's all I've got going on since the last One Room Challenge update. I hope you'll visit the One Room Challenge blog where myself and many, many other decorators, stylists, designers, and DIYers are all linking up our progress through the 6 weeks that is the One Room Challenge.

  1. If it bleeds through, coat it with shellac and it will seal it in. Some woods just bleed through. Red woods and pine are the worst.
I love the color you chose! Can't wait to see your painted buffet!

  2. Love the color choice!! Sorry about the bleeder...bad wood. LOL...But Emy is right, spray shellac on all surfaces...probably two light coats...and then no more bleed. Good luck!! It's a great piece.

  3. Love the wall color! It’s very similar to what I picked for our future wainscoting! And I totally didn’t do a post last week either because Sal left the SD card with all of my pics on it back home.
